Megan Chang Achieves Structural Engineering Licensure
Senior Project Manager Megan Chang successfully passed the rigorous NCEES SE Vertical and Lateral Forces Buildings exams. The California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists has bestowed Megan Chang the esteemed title of Licensed Structural Engineer.
Megan earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, San Diego, and has been with TETER since 2014.
How did TETER support you to achieve SE licensure?
The continued support is appreciated even when you don’t pass the exam and must retake it. TETER also paid for the reference materials and code books necessary for studying, ensuring I had projects with different materials and structural systems to work on so I had tangible experience with what would be on the tests. When I passed the exam, they reimbursed the exam fees and celebrated my success with me.
How does being a Structural Engineer benefit our clients?
Passing the SE exam means that California has recognized me as someone with enough knowledge to be the engineer of record for any project within the state. Having more SE licenses at TETER lets us process K12, energy, and federal projects more smoothly, as more staff are qualified to design them. It also lets our clients know they are hiring the best of the best, as the SE license is the highest license one can get in this profession and is so complex that only a little over 7,000 Structural Engineering licenses have been issued over the 93 years.
How does your Structural Engineering licensure benefit TETER as a whole?
Having engineers with their SE license lets TETER pursue and process larger, more complicated projects, such as K-12, college/university, hospitals, and anything over two stories. We can continue to serve our clients as they grow and their requirements for their buildings become more complex. My SE license also lets me more actively encourage others to attain their licensure, as you need personal recommendations and have work experience working under licensed PEs / SEs as a part of the exam application process. The sheer volume of knowledge you need to pass the SE exam is also beneficial as the SE exam tests on many construction types you may not yet have encountered during your career. Learning these code sections and how to design these materials opens up new possibilities for projects TETER could pursue.
