Architectural Job Captain for our New Office in San Luis Obispo

TETER Architects + Engineers is preparing to open our next office in San Luis Obispo this summer and we’re looking for an experienced Job Captain to join our SLO Team!

Under the leadership of the SLO Project Manager, the Job Captain II will manage the day-to-day operations of assigned phases of a project, working closely with other members of the team to provide solutions of the highest quality and in accordance with firm standards. Assigned projects will primarily be in education and local government, but you may occasionally help another team with military, industrial, commercial, and healthcare projects, giving you the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of industries as you work toward becoming a licensed Architect.

The Job Captain II will be responsible for general architectural design, preparation of construction documents, and integration of drawings prepared by Civil, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers. He/she will perform both routine and specialized aspects of architectural assignments, demonstrating technical skills, experience and design judgment to transform conceptual designs into construction documents. The Job Captain II will also interact with clients as well as help develop and monitor project timeline and budget.

Essential Functions

  • Performs own drafting assignments, both setting up sheets at the start of a new project and making changes on an existing project.
  • Acts as the architectural point of contact on a project for both outside consultants and across disciplines in house.
  • Performs in-depth building code reviews applicable to architectural design.
  • Directs production team with assembling drawings/documents into package.
  • Assists Project Manager with proposals, project work plan, and project financials.
  • Attends governing agency plan check/back check appointments on simple to moderately complex projects and responds to plan check items.
  • Performs Construction Administration for assigned projects (preparing addenda, field reports, change orders; reviewing submittals and processing RFI’s).
  • Communicates over the phone and in-person with clients and consultants at all stages of a project

Education, Experience & Licensure

  • 4-year degree in Architecture, Construction, or other related field
  • 6-10 years of experience in a professional architecture environment, construction, or related field.
  • In possession or pursuit of California Architect license, including NCARB and CAB registration and progression of reported AXP (IDP) hours.
  • AutoCAD and/or REVIT experience is required.


  • Ability to follow instructions, grasp concepts with high attention to detail, and develop drawings and details with minimal oversight after direction is provided.
  • Knowledge of building design from DD through CD phases, basic architectural terminology, architectural materials, and building components.
  • Proficiency in reading/interpreting a construction document set.
  • Excellent verbal, written and graphic communication skills.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation based on experience. Benefits take effect on the 1st of the month following the date of employment and include medical, dental and employee-paid vision plans. A cafeteria plan, 401(k) plans, supplemental insurance, and Wellness and Gym programs are also available.
